| population are not driving enthusiasts but merely drive in order to get from point A to point B at their convenience. As such, they put as little effort/thought as possible into driving. Toyotas are nothing more than appliances on wheels (IMO) and this is why I think they have such a large appeal to these drivers; just like a dishwasher or a washing machine doesn't take much thought operate, they plop behind the wheel with the same expectations of simplicty. Now throw in an emergency situation where one's life (and other's lives) are in danger and they find themselves unable to react properly to the situation. They can't process a thought pattern that equates to the appliance equivalent of hitting the "off" button: putting the car into neutral, steering/braking to the side of the road, and shutting off the car. What is common sense to you and I doesnt' cross their minds because they are partially paralyzed by panic. I'm not saying that I wouldn't have heart palpitations if my car went into sudden acceleration but I've processed the sequence of events through my mind enough times that I believe I'd get the situation under control if it were to happen. I don't think your average driver (Toyota or otherwise) has done the same. Dave
